THE ARTIST.

Lewis Rossignol

Welcome to my studio! I’m Lewis Rossignol, a fine artist who specializes in surrealist and experimental contemporary drawing and painting. I live, work, and teach in downtown Saco, just outside the metropolitan Portland, Maine area.

I draw inspiration from all areas of life, including but not limited to, interesting people, architecture, music, and nature. Like many others from my generation (X), I also draw inspiration from pop culture, movies, and television, especially from the 80s and 90s, which should be apparent from my work.

Artist’s Statement

The Work

“In writing about an artist, a level of care should be taken in balancing the sincerity and lack of conceit the artist brings to their work in accordance with the words the writer puts to paper. Lewis Rossignol is an artist that is as much about the process as he is about the finished piece. And in this way, he can create egoless and benevolent art that still offers plenty of opportunity to challenge us, the observer. This approach to illustration lends itself perfectly to the intimate and frenetic sketchbooks and individual drawings that best represent Lewis Rossignol. Nostalgia and familiarity integrate amicably with the jittery and anxious line work for which Rossignol has become known for.

You can draw your own conclusions as to whether or not there are associations between the work you see and Lewis’ strong connection to both England and the cities of New England. By his own admission, he prefers that you yourself bridge what you view, how it makes you feel and all the things that needed to take place beforehand in order for the art to reach you. Rossignol’s background in blue collar work, music production, painting, & photography all lend themselves to his subjects’ discovery process. But once that subject is selected, he moves past the expected to a place where the past, present and chaos of a post social media world intersect.

He has discussed openly the impact his own Tourette’s diagnosis has had on his approach to art. Because of that, there is an equal importance placed on both the challenge, and the stress relieving properties of being immersed in creating. And as the emphasis sits strongly within the process, Lewis would rather hear other’s descriptions of his art than to provide them himself. While there is a strong focus on his intimate sketchbook-based body of work, He doesn’t shy away from challenging collaborations and projects. Since graduating from MECA in 2017 with a degree in illustration and design, Rossignol has gone to work on a wide variety of projects including providing Limited Edition cover art to the Grammy winning album Igor from Tyler, the Creator  in 2019, and being presented with a solo art opening at The Eric Buterbaugh Gallery in Hollywood. You may have seen his work in print magazines, on skateboards, guitar pedals, album covers, books, adorning beer bottles and of course, on gallery walls. Lately Lewis has been busy creating art courses with Carla Sonheim and he’s recently released his most comprehensive art book to date, Top Drawer.”
